What is Bulky?

Bulky is a web-based tool for bulk editing tasks in Asana via CSV or XLSX import. It works like Asana's CSV import tool except that you can use it not only to create new tasks but to update existing tasks as well.

Who makes Bulky?

My name is Doug and I made Bulky because in a previous job I desperately needed to be able to update existing tasks via CSV and I thought the community might need to as well. Bulky is a labor of love that I work on when I have time and pay for out of my own pocket so please forgive the shortcomings and occasional bugs.

Notes on Usage

• Currently, only Asana accounts with one workspace/organization are supported. If you are in more than one workspace, you may have limited success as long as each new task you create is in a project and that projects, tags, and followers don't have duplicate names across workspaces.
• Task ID is optional. If you leave the Task ID field blank a new task will be created, otherwise the task with the specified ID will be updated. To find the ID of a task, view the task in Asana and look the last number in its URL. For example, in https://app.asana.com/0/123456789/987654321, the ID is 987654321.
• All dates must be in YYYY-MM-DD format.
• Leaving a field blank will leave the field unchanged. To delete a field's value, enter NONE or DELETE.
• You can specify multiple Tags, Followers, and Projects by surrounding the field with quotes and separating the values with commas. For example, "Tag 1, Tag 2, Tag 3".
• Use NONE or DELETE to remove all Tags, Followers, or Projects from a task. If you want to just remove some, remove the value from the field. For example, if you want to remove Tag 2 from the above example, you would enter "Tag 1, Tag 3".
• If you need to specify multiple sections and/or multiple projects for a task, you can do so by adding two colons to the end of the project name and then adding the section name. For example, My Project::In Progress. If you do this, any value in the standard Asana "Section/Column" field will be ignored
• You can not create new Tags, Followers, or Projects in an import file. They must already exist in Asana.
• You may specify a Parent Task by its name as long as the parent task exists as a row in the uploaded file. If the parent task is not in the file but exists in Asana, you must specify it by its Task ID.
• Custom fields are not yet supported.

Bulky accepts the native Asana CSV export format, but also has its own slightly different format which allows for adding a task to multiple projects and sections at once.

Upload .CSV or .XLSX File (limit of 100 rows)

You may upload a larger file but only the first 100 rows will be processed. Why?

The reason for the row limit is that moving the data back and forth to/from Asana is slow, meaning that an upload that is too long could time out before all tasks are updated in Asana. If it does, we'll be left with some tasks updated and some tasks not updated and no way to tell which are which, which is maybe worse than nothing getting updated at all. There are ways to engineer Bulky to handle this but it's a big effort and I just don't have the time to build or maintain that kind of complexity right now, unfortunately.
